| I am 42 years old, a husband, a father of 3 girls, and owner of Captured Expressions Taxidermy in Coeur d’ Alene Idaho. I am also a Board member for our local SCI chapter, and the Idaho Trappers Association. With family obligations and a growing full time successful business, I had to find some way to get out and hunt just a little bit more. It first started with a mild winter several years ago. I decided I was going to bait for spring bears when only a few customers were brining hides into the shop. I already had a good understanding about prevailing winds, thermals, and natural funnels so finding a location on a map was not that difficult. That first year is what hooked me. When the bears started hitting the bait, you could count on 4-6 bears in the afternoon visiting the sight. I took a nice cinnamon boar that spring. Nice being 19 2/8” Boone and Crocket. Little did I know this was going to cause a big problem for me. You see, my then 12 year old daughter wanted to hunt for fall bear and apparently she has a little competitive streak in her that I had never seen. Needless to say that fall she watched 18 bears and never filled her tag. Why?? You ask, because she wanted one bigger than her dad’s and was willing to let them all walk in order to do that. She’s not so picky now. Bear season is when hunters need to get kids involved. They can potentially see several bears in an afternoon and it allows for a little one on one time. Keeping there interest peaked is what it’s all about and having an animal in front of them will do that. Baiting bears with kids is not just about the time in the field. My little ones can’t wait until we start making bear bait. I fill my truck up with breads from my secret supplier and haul it all home. The girls help unload and then we start. I have commercial grade trash compactor that the girls fill and compress the treats into nice tight 50lb blocks that go into the freezer. When ready, I strap 2 blocks onto the pack frame and to the bait station we go. Sometimes this process of making the blocks can take weeks but the girls love doing it.
